More Information

  GROUP/ID CODE INFORMATION RECORDING: (831) 420-2203

Please call the telephone number above after 5:30 P.M. on Friday the weekend prior to your summons date and each evening of the week you are summoned.

  IDENTIFYING INFORMATION:
You have been selected at random from the DMV OR VOTER REGISTRATION records to serve as a prospective juror.
  JUROR FEES:
Jurors receiving compensation will be paid $15.00 per day and $0.34 (34 cents) per mile, one-way from residence to the court, starting on your second day of service.
LENGTH OF SERVICE AND TRIAL DURATION:

You will be on telephone standby beginning with the date printed on the face of your summons and continuing through Friday of that business week. If you are required to report and you are not selected to serve on a trial and are not ordered by the court to return for a second or subsequent day of selection, your term of service will be complete. Please be advised that the day you report in you may go through more than one selection process. If you are selected to serve on a trial, your term of service will be the length of that trial. Trials are of varying length. The trial judge will advise you of the trial duration, and you may be excused from that particular trial if your service would amount to an extreme hardship. The average trial length is 3-4 days.

If you are disqualified or you are requesting a postponement or excuse you must complete and mail the affidavit with any required document within the next five days in the envelope enclosed in your summons. Retain the summons portion for your records. Excuse requests must explain why a postponement of jury service will not solve the problem.

  POSTPONEMENT OF JURY SERVICE:

If you are not available for the week scheduled, you may request ONE POSTPONEMENT of your service. In the postponement section of the AFFIDAVIT OF PROSPECTIVE JUROR, SELECT A WEEK YOU WILL BE AVAILABLE WITHIN THE NEXT 6 MONTHS. You will receive a new summons by mail approximately one month prior to the date you have selected.

  EXCUSES:

All excuses must be made in writing and are considered on an individual basis. California law requires a new file be created annually. It is possible that you may have been excused in the past for a reason that is still prohibiting you from serving. If this is the case simply complete the AFFIDAVIT OF PROSPECTIVE JUROR and enclose the appropriate documentation.

  FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

I have received a Jury Summons in the mail. What if I am on vacation or unable to attend?

You may request a one time only postponement of your service.   STUDENTS AND TEACHERS ARE NOT EXEMPT FROM SERVING.

Inconvenience to a prospective juror or an employer is not a legal reason to be excused from jury service. You may request to be postponed for this reason.
