The Self-Help Legal Resource Center located in the Law Library at 701 Ocean Street is now open. The Staff Attorney working at the Self-Help Center is bilingual (English/Spanish) and is available to provide assistance for self-represented litigants in the following types of cases: adoption, guardianship, conservatorship, civil harassment, unlawful detainer, change of name and traffic appeals. The Staff Attorney will explain the court process and procedures, provide the appropriate court forms (for a fee; usually 20 cents a page), provide information regarding local court rules, and provide access via the Internet to the on-line California Courts Self-Help Center. There will be several computers available for self-represented litigants to use on their own to obtain self-help information and instructions to complete court forms, and interactive sets of court forms that can be completed and printed for many cases. The Staff Attorney does not give legal advice nor represent any particular litigant, and no confidential or attorney-client relationship is created or intended. The Staff Attorney may assist both sides of the same case. Aside from the fees for the forms, there is no fee to use the services of the Self-help Center. Services will be provided on a first-come, first-serve basis. The Center will be open at the following times; Monday, Tuesday and Thursday: 1:30 PM to 4 PM, closed Wednesday, Friday: 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM & 1:30 PM to 4 PM. A monthly calendar will be provided to show any days when the Center is closed for vacation, holidays, pro per court, etc.
